The town of Gainesville is the seat of Hall County, Georgia and part of the North Atlanta Metro area. The population as of the 2019 census was 43,232, an increase from 33,804 tracked by the census in wo10. Because of its extensive chicken processing industry, it’s often referred to as the “Poultry Capital of the World.” Gainesville is the most notable city of the Gainesville, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is blanketed within the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Gainesville, Georgia Combined Statistical Area.
Gainesville was originally established as “Mule Camp Springs” through European-American settlers in the early 1800s. Less than three years after the Hall County was established on December 15, 1818, Mule Camp Springs was renamed as “Gainesville” on April 21, 1821. It was named in honor of General Edmund P. Gaines, a hero of the War of 1812 and a noted military surveyor and road-builder. Gainesville was designated to be the county seat and chartered by means of the Georgia General Assembly on November 30, 1821.
In nearby Lumpkin County, a gold rush boom began in the 1830s that led to a significant increase in the number of settlers moving to the area and created a thriving commercial enterprise community. In the middle of the nineteenth century, Gainesville had two monumental events. In 1849, it became renowned as a resort area, with local springs attracting visitors from the surrounding counties. In 1851, the majority of the small city was destroyed by an out of control fire.
Gainesville saw growth after the Civil War starting in 1870. In 1871 the Airline Railroad, later named the Georgia Southern Railroad, started out in Gainesville, increasing its ties to different markets and stimulating enterprise and population. It grew from 1,000 in 1870, to over 5,000 by 1900.
