In the past Carrollton has served as a commercial center for rural counties in both Alabama and Georgia and has a large community of farmers. When a railroad was established in Carrollton, GA, in 1874 the city enjoyed newfound prosperity as farmers were able to bring crops to town for easy shipment markets previously unavailable and new consumer goods made it to the region. Textile industries began to foster in the areas surrounding Carrollton as well, as the 20th-century began. Textiles and agriculture played less of a role in Carrollton’s economy in the latter half of the 20th century as the cotton industry declined and the city became more urbanized, the most notable of these being the Southwire Company who manufactures cable and wiring.
