Many people consider Dunwoody in Georgia as the ultimate place for premier shopping and fine dining near Atlanta. With the Perimeter Mall close by, this is a happening place for everyone in the city. But, Dunwoody didn’t even exist until December 2008. It was a community-led movement that forced officials to recognize it as a prominent city.

Even though this city was not recognized until a decade ago, people always considered themselves as residents of Dunwoody. It’s a city with a distinctive history, separating them from popular cities in DeKalb County.

Dunwoody has always been a prominent area of commerce even before its recognition. It was the Cherokee Indian tribe who first started living in this area, primarily because of its close location to the Chattahoochee River. Back then, Dunwoody was the busiest and the most significant trading center in Atlanta. By 1820, there were several Cherokee farms around the Chattahoochee River. Soon, white settlers started moving in. They created numerous homesteads and slowly the area’s population started expanding.

Dunwoody Landmarks

Dunwoody is widely popular for its cultural and ethnic diversity. The city has approximately 48,000 people. Many young couples prefer to move to Dunwoody to start their family. That is why the city has a median age of 37 only. Although most people know Dunwoody for its extravagant dining and shopping centers, it has over 170 acres of green pastures and 7 major parks. Dunwoody, located only 10 miles from Atlanta has a small-town lifestyle. People still live ‘inside the Perimeter,’ per se, which is quite close to Atlanta.

Some of the most popular tourist spots in Dunwoody are as follows:

Dunwoody Village

If you love to learn about the history of Dunwoody, you shouldn’t miss this place. It has the Colonial Williamsburg architecture that takes you back in time. The community centers built in the 1970s around Dunwoody Village Shopping Center contributed to naming this city. It was this shopping center that introduced the unique architectural identity of Dunwoody to others in Atlanta. In fact, most constructions since have followed this style. The iconic Dunwoody Farmhouse is also located in the Dunwoody Village. Established in 1906, the people restored the farmhouse, which now hosts various community events.

Perimeter Center

The Perimeter Mall has a significant contribution behind the forming of the Perimeter Center. The mall became an intersection point between GA 400 and I-285, two major highways. The surrounding of this area covered the Sandy Springs and the Fulton county line. Perimeter Mall, established in 1971 increased the development of both residential and commercial properties in this area. Since people could use the Dunwoody Transit Station, it became a highly convenient place for everyone. Perimeter Center has become one of the significant job centers in Atlanta, with thousands of people working here.

The State Farm also started its headquarters in here quite recently. The real estate is growing in the Perimeter Center with people investing in shops, restaurants, condos, all to encourage a family lifestyle in this zone.

Georgetown

Developed in 1960, Georgetown is an ideal place to experience the ‘live, work, play’ lifestyle. It has both a commercial space with a retail district and residential subdivisions consisting of single families. Georgetown experienced significant overdevelopment immediately after 1960. This led to the incorporation of Dunwoody. It borders the city of Chamblee and is also very close to I-285.

The Branches

This is a highly popular tennis and swimming neighborhood. Located right between the Spalding Drive and Mount Vernon Road, The Branches shared a part of its neighborhood with Dunwoody and another part with Sandy Springs. The Branches Club is one of the luxurious clubs in the city that has two outdoor pavilions, a playground, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a clubhouse.

Wyntercreek

The Colonial Williamsburg style architecture along with magnolias, dogwoods, and leafy green oaks make Wyntercreek one of the most beautiful places in Atlanta. It is a 10-minute walk to the shopping centers and restaurants. Those who don’t want to travel miles to shop should consider Wyntercreek as their permanent residential location. It has an active neighborhood that hosts various social gatherings and parties.

Redfield

Another popular neighborhood extending to Dunwoody, Redfield is suitable for people of all ages. It has everything you can ask for – grocery stores, restaurants, banks; you name it. Plus, it also has a Swim & Tennis club in the neighborhood.
