Smyrna is a city in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. It is found northwest of Atlanta and is just inside the inner ring of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 51,271. The U.S. Census Bureau predicted the population in 2019 to be 56,666. It is included within the Atlanta-Sandy SpringsāRoswell MSA, that’s included in the AtlantaāAthensāClarkeāSandy Springs CSA.Ā It is historically one of the fastest-growing cities within Georgia, and one of the most densely populated cities within the Atlanta metro area.
Pioneers began to settle the land in 1832. By the late 1830s, a religious encampment known as Smyrna CampGround became a popular travel vacation spot and became widely known for the duration of Georgia. It is a Greek name for the Biblical town of Smyrna, present-day Izmir in Turkey, the house of the Christian martyr Polycarp. After the Western and Atlantic Railroad was established in the area in 1842, it experienced rapid growth. It went through several name changes until 1872āVarner’s Station, Ruff’s Siding, Neal Dow, and Ruff’s Station, before settling on Smyrna.
Two Civil War battles occurred inside the city, the Battle of Smyrna CampGround, and the Battle of Ruff’s Mill, both on July 4, 1864. The city’s businesses, houses, and covered bridge were burned by Sherman’s troops, but were rebuilt shortly after and are still in use today.
A nearby Bell Bomber plant produced B-29 bombers during in World War II and was closed shortly after. Though it was reopened through Lockheed in 1951 and became the main factor in the more recent growth of the city.
