Villa Rica is a city located in Carroll and Douglas counties in Georgia. The population was estimated to be over 13,000 by the 2010 census, a growth of over 200% since 2000.
The location that came to be known as Villa Rica was originally settled in 1826 along what is now Dallas Highway after being ceded by the Creek people in 1825. In 1826, farmers and gold miners flocked to the area, known as “Hixtown” at the time, from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Hixtown and another nearby town, Chevestown, relocated to Villa Rica’s present location in 1882 when the railroad was built, moving many of the original buildings with them by rolling them on logs pulled by horses. The city was officially incorporated as Villa Rica in 1881, deriving its name from Spanish, meaning “rich village,” to help promote the gold that had been found in the area.
Although the city did not develop into a large gold rush destination that would strike other portions fo Georgia a few years later, there was a small gold rush in Villa Rica in the late 1820s. When the Georgia Gold Rush took hold most miners in Villa Rica moved northeast near Dahlonega in 1829. Nevertheless, mining persisted in the area, with nearby mines employing several hundred men. The gold supplies in the area were eventually depleted by 1860.
Hixtown and Cheevestown combined to become the new city of Villa Rica after the arrival of a new railroad line. The first train stopped in the city in June 1882. This young community experienced two disastrous fires very early into its founding. The first fire burned an entire block of stores in the business section on Montgomery Street in 1890. The second fire, fueled by oil and chemicals from a drug store it originated in, occurred on the night of July 27, 1908. The scale of the fire caused citizens to focus on saving the stock of the affected stores rather than extinguish it. When it finally burned out one-quarter of Villa Rica’s business district was destroyed.
