A post office, known as «Rex» was established in 1882, leading to a town being formed in the area around it. Rex derived its name from the Latin word meaning «king». Rex was integrated as a city in 1912 by the Georgia General Assembly and went on to have its municipal charter repealed in 1922. The Georgia Historic Trust identified the Historic Rex Village as a place in peril as of 2011.
