Located northwest of Atlanta, Clarkdale, Georgia, is located in southwestern Cobb County, between Austell and Powder Springs. Clarkdale is the hometown of Novelty and Country frontman Ray Stevens and has its own postal district of 30111.
Originally founded in 1932, Clarkdale was an industrial textile mill city that originally was intended to support a spinning mill of Coats and Clark Thread Company. Architect Joseph Emory Serine of North Carolina designed the 98 home neighborhood and the mill. At the time the city had many conveniences we take for granted today, like electricity and indoor plumbing. Even further the city had a public swimming pool, community house for events, and the mill sponsored a baseball team. The growth of the mill allowed the community to thrive and develop a healthy network of local businesses, a local post office, and two churches, both of which still hold service as of 2017.
Cutbacks during the 1950s and 1960s led to the mill’s slow demise, ultimately closing in 1983. Homes owned by the mill were sold off to employees, both current and former, of the mill in 1966. In 1987 Clarkdale was recognized in the National Register of Historic Places.
Noses Creek overflowed in the 2009 Atlanta floods and left the recently evacuated Clarkdale Elementary School ruined. The school was built near a 100-yard flood plain that pooled extreme rainfall and caused the stream to grow ten times in size flooding numerous locations in the city. Clarkdale Elementary School rebuilt and opened again in 2012.
